About / History of Sleighbell
Sleighbell is Southern California Delta Delta Delta's traditional opening of the holiday season. Funds raised at Sleighbell support Children's Hospital Los Angeles for hematology-oncology research.
After World War II, Delta Delta Delta alumnae in southern California felt the need for a local philanthropy. At the first fall meeting in 1947 of Los Angeles Alliance (alumnae chapter), it was recommended that support was needed for Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Initially only Glendale, Pasadena and Valley alliances assisted Los Angeles. Over the years, support has grown to include both alumnae and collegiate Tri Deltas, as well as numerous friends, family members, and corporate sponsors.
That first year, $1500 was raised from Tri Delta patrons and friends. The next year, a benefit luncheon was held. It proved a big success and raised $3500 for the hospital. Funds in those early years were used for whatever purpose the hospital thought necessary. In 1951, Mrs. Gabriel Duque of Children's Hospital Los Angeles met with members of Sleighbell Committee and requested donations to the field of hematology. These would be the first funds available for this important research, and allowed the department to remain at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Today, hematology/oncology research at Children's Hospital Los Angeles is recognized worldwide. Tri Deltas are proud to have made this research program possible.
The Sleighbell Committee served as a unifying force in the widespread Los Angeles region which encompasses nearly 5000 square miles, and now features alumnae chapters and collegiate chapters. It provided a template for philanthropic events hosted by alumnae groups in other cities. At Tri Delta's 1974 Convention, Sleighbell Day was the name adopted for all annual philanthropic events. Sleighbell Committee's work on behalf of Children's Hospital Los Angeles was a prime reason Children's Cancer Charities was designated as Delta Delta Delta Fraternity's official philanthropy.
Sleighbell Committee takes pride in our long tradition of support for hematology/ oncology research at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. We gratefully thank all those who have joined us in this critical endeavor today and in the past.
