Impact of Sleighbell on Tri Delta

Sleighbell became a landmark event that affected Tri Delta's history.

Tri Delta alumnae belonging to alumnae chapters in Southern California were asked to raise funds to support a doctor researching blood diseases at Children's Hospital in downtown Los Angeles. In response to this request, the chapters organized a benefit luncheon. Such was the origin of the longest running, continually supported Tri Delta philanthropy - the annual Southern California Sleighbell Luncheon.

In the early 1970s, a national survey established that Tri Delta chapters were interested in children, hospitals and cancer.  At the 1974 Convention, it was decided to combine the three interests and observe Sleighbell Day on the first Tuesday of December, following the Southern California tradition.

As a result, Tri Deltas throughout the nation concentrated their philanthropic support toward local research and treatment facilities, camps and scholarships for children with cancer.

The fundraising success and the alumnae and collegiate support of Sleighbell in Southern California made it the blueprint for Tri Delta's international philanthropy, Children's Cancer Charities. The year-round cooperation, hard work and dedication of the Sleighbell Committee serves as a unifying force in this widespread geographical region that encompasses numerous alumnae chapters and collegiate chapters.

In November 1999, Tri Delta further enhanced its current philanthropic focus by forming a partnership with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. This partnership allows Tri Delta chapters the option to help St. Jude on a national level as well as support traditional philanthropic events for local children's cancer charities.

Tri Delta’s chosen philanthropy is Children’s Cancer Charities. Tri Delta’s philanthropy allows chapters and members to choose to support a local hospital like Children's Hospital Los Angeles, a local project like children’s hospital or a cancer camp, and to support the efforts of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Whatever the choice, Tri Deltas are joining together to offer financial and volunteer contributions to the research and treatment of children with cancer. Together Tri Delta is making a difference.

Thank you for your support of Delta Delta Delta and Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
